Why Do Fluid Leaks and Hose Disconnections Occur? Explaining the Causes and Key Preventive Measures

Hose Advisor PRO

Have you ever had a hose come off or leak fluid even though it is installed correctly on the coupling? Leaks and disconnections not only hinder production efficiency but can also lead to loss of raw materials and other production problems. In this article, Hose Adviser Pro explains the main causes of leaks and hose disconnections, along with practical countermeasures.

Key points of this article

  • Most common causes of leaks and disconnections:
    (1) Hose hardening and (2) Mismatched hose and coupling sizes
  • Leaks/disconnection countermeasure 1:
Selecting hoses and couplings that suit the usage conditions
  • Leaks/disconnections countermeasure 2:
Performing regular maintenance and replacing damaged hoses as soon as possible

What causes hoses to leak or become disconnected?

(1) Hose hardening

Why does hose hardening lead to leaks and disconnections?
Let’s take a closer look at how hose hardening leads to leaks and disconnections.
Select from among A, B, and C below.

A. Because fluids flow more easily in stiffer hoses
B. Because the hose length is reduced
C. Because the elasticity of the hose decreases

The correct answer is C. Because the elasticity of the hose decreases.

PVC (polyvinyl chloride) resin, a common material for hoses, can harden due to fluids (oils and chemicals), heat (temperature), and long-term use. This hardening and the resulting loss of elasticity are a major cause of leaks and disconnections.

When the hose is attached to the nipple, the hose will try to return to its original size, which will prevent it from disconnecting. However, this tendency can be hindered by hardening due to the type of fluid being conveyed and heat or prolonged use. Over time, the hose will no longer be able to hold back the pressure of the fluid it is carrying, causing fluid to leak between the hose and nipple or the hose to become disconnected.

(2) Mismatched hose diameter and coupling sizes

Leaks and disconnections are more likely to occur if the couplings (fittings) are not the correct size for the hose diameter.

A coupling that is too small can easily fit into the hose, but it is more likely to form gaps that can lead to leaks and disconnections. A coupling that is too large will be difficult to insert into the hose, making hose disconnection more likely due to not being able to insert the coupling all the way into the hose.

Using correctly sized hoses and couplings is important both for preventing leaks and disconnections and for improving efficiency.

Measures to prevent leaks and disconnections

To prevent leaks and disconnections, it is necessary to select a hose and couplings appropriate for the usage conditions, perform regular maintenance, and replace damaged hoses as soon as possible.

General-purpose hoses can harden over time due to the type of fluid they carry (oil, chemical, etc.) and heat. For example, when working with high-temperature fluids, selecting a hose with high heat resistance can help prevent hardening. Using a coupling designed to prevent leaks and disconnections and carefully choosing an appropriate coupling for the hose size can further reduce problems.

Using dedicated couplings designed by hose manufacturers specifically to fit their hoses is even more effective. Compared to connections between general-purpose hose clamps and coupling nipples, Toyox’s TOYOCONNECTOR dedicated couplings eliminate variations in where and by how much workers tighten the hose. TOYOCONNECTOR hose couplings offer numerous benefits, such as reduced time spent on piping work and significant energy-saving effects.
